Swami Kriyananda Shares the Divine Love and Wisdom of Paramhansa Yogananda

SWAMI KRIYANANDA HAS BEEN  a disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda since 1948. As a young monk, he spent many hours receiving the Master’s guidance. At Yogananda’s request, he recorded hundreds of his conversations, anecdotes, and sayings.

Yogananda’s mission was not, as some claim, to start a monastery, or to serve a few chosen disciples. He came to restore religion to its rightful place of respect in the world, by answering the challenges of materialistic science, and by showing people how they can make their religion practical, by their own inner communion with God.

Swami Kriyananda gives us a true “insider’s look” at the life, legacy, and world mission of this great avatar (a liberated soul whom God sends to earth to help mankind in a time of special need).

Yogananda told Kriyananda often, “You have a great work to do.” Preserving his Master’s wisdom for the ages was just one part of that important work. Swami Kriyananda’s books present that wisdom in its true, world-changing proportions.

In the 1920s, audiences filled the largest halls in America to hear Paramhansa Yogananda speak. His impact was impressive, but his lasting influence has been greater still. Autobiogoraphy of a Yogi, first published in 1946, helped launch a worldwide spiritual revolution.

Followers of many religious traditions now recognize the Autobiography as a treasure of God-inspired wisdom. Yet it is also full of humor, entertaining stories, and down-to-earth common sense. This version is a verbatim reprint of the original edition, with the addition of hitherto unpublished materials. This is the only edition that contains:

  • The original unedited text, as written by Yogananda himself, free of changes introduced by others after his passing.
  • An appendix containing the final chapter written five years after this edition was first published, presented without changes made after Yogananda’s death.
  • An all-new foreword and afterword by Swami Kriyananda, one of Yogananda’s closest disciples.

Paramhansa Yogananda’s classic Autobiography of a Yogi dwelt more on the saints Yogananda met, than on the master himself — despite his status as an avatar, literally a manifestation of God in human form tasked with a special mission to the world at a time of great need.

Swami Kriyananda, one of Yogananda’s few living direct disciples, tells the story of this great spiritual master and world teacher: his early miracles, his challenges in coming to America, his struggles to fulfill his world-changing mission amid incomprehension and betrayal, and his ultimate triumph.

Swami Kriyananda’s grasp of his great guru’s nature and teachings reveals Yogananda’s spiritual stature, and his greatness as a lover of God and of mankind. This book includes many previously unpublished anecdotes of the Master.

“Swami Kriyananda’s work enriches our understanding of Yogananda with revealing narratives told here for the first time. Here is a loving biography of a spiritual teacher, written by a disciple attentive to historical accuracy.” – Anantanand Rambachan, Professor and Chair, Religion Department, Saint Olaf College

Swami Kriyananda gives us a priceless account of Paramhansa Yogananda’s wisdom, recorded during his four years as a monk in his Master’s ashrams.

At Yogananda’s request, the young monk (then known as Donald Walters) recorded his words — a precious legacy for all mankind. “Walter,” as the Master called him, was often present when Yogananda spoke privately with other close disciples, when he received visitors and answered their questions, and when he dictated correspondence and books and discussed points of interest in his writings.

These Conversations include not only Yogananda’s words as he spoke them, but the insights of a close disciple who has now spent more than 60 years reflecting on their meaning. Yogananda comes alive as we sit at the feet of the Master and absorb his wisdom, delight in his humor, and feel his transforming love.

The Essence of Self-Realization - The Wisdom of Paramhansa Yogananda

Paramhansa Yogananda came on earth with a mission to restore religion to its proper position of respect in human life – by answering the challenges of materialistic science, and by showing people how they can make their religion practical by direct inner communion with God.

Great teachers are unable singlehandedly to complete their mission; and so they work through their students. Swami Kriyananda writes in the introduction to the present volume, “After I’d been with him a year and a half, he began urging me to write down the things he was saying during informal conversations.” The Essence of Self-Realization shares close to 300 sayings of the Master, all of them rich with his spiritual wisdom.

“A wonderful book! To find a previously unknown message from Yogananda now is an extraordinary spiritual gift. Open up at random for an encouraging word from one of this century’s most beloved spiritual teachers.” – Body, Mind, Spirit Magazine

This book explores an amazing statement by Paramhansa Yogananda: that he was the historical figure, William the Conqueror, in a previous life.

The Norman Conquest of England was a pivotal event in world history. In countless ways, it changed the course of western civilization. Is it possible that two of the greatest men of that era, William, and his son, Henry I, reincarnated as Paramhansa Yogananda (author of Autobiography of a Yogi) and his close disciple, Swami Kriyananda? If so, what are the similarities between their lives at the time of the Conquest and in the last century? William and Henry unified England under one monarchy and set the course of English law. Henry’s reign was marked by 33 years of unbroken peace and harmony — an unprecedented event in those extremely violent and politically turbulent medieval times. Are their most recent lives similarly destined to affect the course of world history today?

“[Two Souls: Four Lives] is well-researched and, if you like medieval British history, a cracking good read.” — Ian Lawton, Rational Spirituality Press, author of The Wisdom of the Soul

“It is a story about King William I, who, on a mission from God and for service to others, brought positive spiritual changes to his country and the world. William’s son Henry carried on his father’s vision….

“I consider it an honor to have been asked to offer my opinion of such an insight to history and the confirmation of spiritual truths.” — A.L. Ward, CHt, author of The Inner Mind Revisited: Researching the Soul
